July 2020

Regeneration of the Chum Creek roadside verge near Ainsworth Ave.

A rather large roadside verge beside Chum Creek road near Ainsworth Ave had become over-run with weeds, particularly blackberries.

The valley up which Ainsworth road starts drains through this verge into Chum Creek, a short distance away.

Chum Creek Landcare obtained permission from VicRoads to clean up the weeds and regenerate some of this area with indigenous shrubs and grasses.

The Yarra Ranges Shire has been extremely helpful, spraying the blackberries in 2019, after which Chum Creek Landcare members piled up the dead blackberry canes and cut, then piled up pieces of wood on the site.

The Shire then removed the canes and cut down the weeds, covering sections of the area with large weed mats.

Chum Creek Landcare then purchased seedlings from the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater Nursery and planted these on 18 July 2020, again in relays using groups of 2, socially spaced.
